FAQs

Who is therapy for?

Anyone. Health and wellbeing extend beyond the physical. Everybody has relational health, spiritual health, financial health, psychological health, and so forth. Therapy can therefore benefit anyone who wishes to strengthen their psychological health.

Besides reducing distress and the impact of debilitating symptoms, strengthening our psychological health can also help us to experience more harmony within ourselves, greater ease in living in alignment with our values, improved relationships with others, better mood, increased energy, better concentration, higher motivation, and a deeper sense of purpose, contentment, and fulfilment.

What can I expect in therapy sessions?

The early sessions will typically involve getting to know you, your story, and what you hope therapy can help you with.

Subsequently, each therapy session can vary according to your most pertinent concerns and needs, as well as agreed upon goals. However, in general, you will learn to manage your symptoms such that they stabilize over time (notwithstanding symptom increases due to triggers).

Other aspects of the therapeutic process can include, where relevant, inviting you to understand the role and function of your emotions, gently increasing your capacity to be with your emotions in order to be enriched by their underlying wisdom, curiously exploring any thought patterns and beliefs that may no longer be serving the person you are today, and guiding you to make sense of the deeper reasons behind why you feel, react, and behave the way that you do so that you can choose your path forward with increased clarity and purpose.

The therapy process can be both difficult and rewarding. There are real growing pains, analogous to a baby who experiences growing pains as their brain and body matures. Just as a baby’s growing pains culminates in new developmental milestones, our growing pains are also part of the process in order for our new milestones to happen.

We have seen many people experience their growing pains and their new milestones, as well as the experiences of relief, awe, joy, and gratitude when this eventuates.

How long does each therapy session last?

Sessions are typically 45-50 minutes.

How often do I need to come for therapy?

Weekly therapy appointments are recommended, especially in the early stages of therapy. As you become more confident in managing your symptoms and triggers, the frequency of therapy generally reduces accordingly.

Having said this, everyone has different needs. It is recommended that you and your therapist discuss the frequency of sessions when you begin to work together.

How many sessions do I need?

It depends on numerous factors, including your therapy goals.

Research has shown that symptom reduction can take around 8 to 20 sessions. Deeper healing work that facilitates a safer, more compassionate, loving, and confident relationship with yourself and others usually requires more sessions. Jean explains more here.

As everyone’s circumstances are unique, it is recommended that you and your therapist discuss the number of sessions possibly needed for your goals when you start to work together.
